As almost everyone knows, Turkish coffee and Turkish tea hold a special place in Turkish culture, and both beverages are growing increasingly popular worldwide.
We Turks offer tea to guests—acquaintances or strangers alike—when sitting down for a chat. However, if the guest is someone we value or if it is a sincere meeting, we offer them Turkish Coffee. We even have a proverb—“A cup of coffee is remembered for forty years”—to express how such a simple, heartfelt gesture leaves a lasting impression.
Before starting the recipe, there are a few points to know about Turkish coffee;
1. Coffee can be made with milk or water. You choose this according to your taste.
2. The amount of sugar can be prepared in 3 different ways: sugar free, medium-sweet, or sweet, depending on your taste.
If you order Turkish coffee at a cafe, they will ask if it should be with or without milk and your sugar preference.
3. We serve coffee in cups specific to Turkish coffee called fincan. A fincan is smaller than other coffee cups.
4. Turkish coffee is always served with a small glass of water. It is a common tradition to serve Turkish delight with coffee.
5. Having a lot of foam in the cup is desirable. Turkish coffee without foam is not very popular in our country 😊
6. Coffee sediment, called “telve,” accumulates in the bottom third of the cup. This part is not drunk and remains at the bottom of the cup.
7. Turkish coffee beans are rich in chlorogenic acid, a powerful antioxidant that may help reduce inflammation and support heart health. In Türkiye, it’s even recommended to enjoy one cup a day for its potential benefits. (Reference: “What Are the Benefits of Turkish Coffee?”, Memorial Hospitals Group [in Turkish])
Preparing Turkish coffee takes 2-5 minutes, depending on how many people you will serve it to.
Ingredients
• Turkish coffee,
• Water (or milk, if preferred),
• Granulated sugar (sugar may not be used, depending on taste).
Instructions
Step 1: Add as many cups (fincan) of water (or milk) to the coffee pot (we called it a cezve) as the number of servings. For example, two cups of water should be put into the cezve for two people. If you make it with milk, add the same amount instead of water.

Step 2: Put 1.5 teaspoons of Turkish coffee into the cezve for each cup.

Step 3: Add sugar to the cezve according to your sugar preference. To prepare medium-sweet coffee, add half a teaspoon of granulated sugar for each cup. For example, if you prepare medium-sweet coffee for two people, you should put one teaspoon of granulated sugar into the coffee pot. You can increase or decrease the sugar according to your taste.

Step 4: Stir until the sugar and coffee completely dissolve to prevent clumping.
Step 5: Place the cezve on the smallest burner of the stove and cook on low heat.
Step 6: When foam forms, remove the cezve from the stove and divide the foam formed equally into each fincan with a teaspoon.

Step 7: Put the cezve back on the stove and cook on low heat until it boils.

Step 8: Remove the cezve from the stove and pour it into cups once it boils. It is now ready to serve. Enjoy!
